Empowering Women Through Sports and Financial Independence

Overview

During Women’s Month in August 2023, African Response conducted a study through the MzansiVoice panel, engaging 150 female participants to explore their views on women’s sports and the financial tools available to them.

The insights gained from these discussions highlight the importance of increased sponsorship for women’s sports, the pivotal role of Stokvels in empowering women financially, and the inspirational influence of female role models in South African communities.

Sponsorship and Women’s Sports

The study reveals a strong consensus among participants that greater sponsorship and media coverage for women’s sports are crucial for achieving parity with men’s sports.

Many women believe that sustained awareness campaigns, alongside corporate sponsorships, are essential for promoting competitive leagues and ensuring fair treatment, including equal pay for female athletes.

This call for support extends to the formation of leagues across various sporting codes, which are seen as vital for enhancing the strength and visibility of women’s sports.

Stokvels: A Tool for Financial Empowerment

Stokvels emerge as a powerful financial tool for women, particularly those involved in small businesses such as fast food, clothing, cosmetics sales, and salon services. These community-based savings groups offer financial freedom and a means of self-reliance, with many women prioritizing financial participation over education and home improvements.

The benefits of Stokvels are multifaceted, providing not only economic support but also fostering a sense of unity and empowerment among women.

According to the latest insights, 85% of women view Stokvels primarily as a source of financial empowerment. Beyond the financial aspect, Stokvels also serve as a crucial means of connecting and networking with others, with 55% of women highlighting this as a key benefit. Additionally, 25% of respondents value the sense of belonging that comes with being part of a Stokvel.

These findings underscore the significant role that Stokvels play in supporting financial independence, building community connections, and fostering a strong sense of empowerment among women.

The Role of Women in Communities

Women in South African communities, particularly mothers, grandmothers, and sisters, are celebrated as strong role models. Figures like Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and prominent women in business and entertainment, such as Connie Ferguson and Bonang Matheba, are cited as sources of inspiration.

These women have made significant contributions to their communities, whether through personal relationships or public achievements, and have inspired others to pursue self-reliance and community empowerment.

Conclusion

The insights from this study underscore the importance of multi-stakeholder engagement in supporting women’s sports and financial empowerment. By increasing sponsorship and media coverage for women’s sports and leveraging financial tools like Stokvels, we can create a more equitable and supportive environment for women.

The influence of strong female role models further highlights the potential for women to drive positive change in their communities, making Women’s Month not just a time for reflection but a call to action for continued progress.
